Britain is poised for the warmest February it has had for 178 years.

Over the coming days plumes of warm air from the Sahara are expected to bring temperatures up.

Forecasters say that temperatures could even stick around into April and are predicted to reach as high as 25C.

The country will be on the edge of a ridge of high pressure which will lure the very mild flow towards the UK from south of the Azores, pushing temperatures to unseasonably mild levels.

This weekend it should heat up as warm south-westerly winds and may push the mercury up past the previous record for this month.

The Met Office said: “A flow of air from the Canary Islands is bringing highs potentially 8-10C above average, with very, very nice conditions and extended sunshine. It stays mild into next week.”
