Danny Cowley has told Lincoln City supporters to revel in the sight of their side at the top of the League One table.

But the Imps boss insists he and his squad’s feet will remain planted to the floor as he warned of tougher challenges to come.

Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Southend United saw Lincoln top the table on goal difference from Blackpool.

In a start which is beyond the wildest dreams of fans, the Imps have scored nine goals in four games, including the Carabao Cup win at Huddersfield, and are still yet to concede.

A hectic August continues with a trip to MK Dons on Tuesday before another away match, at Doncaster Rovers, on Saturday.

Following the Carabao Cup tie with Everton on August 28, Fleetwood Town, who have also made a good start, visit Sincil Bank on August 31.

“We’re now going into a tough run of games, with two away games,” said Cowley.

“There are two really tough challenges in front of us. We go into those games confident but knowing it’s still very early on in the season.

“I suppose everyone is going to get ahead of themselves, particularly after the way we finished the [Southend] game because we finished with dominance, which was pleasing.

“But I’m realistic enough to know that during that first period, there was very little between the teams and the [first] goal had a big influence of the game.

“The supporters will get excited – and you want them to be excited – because Lincoln City supporters have had enough dark days, so they should enjoy days like this.

“But in the changing room, it’s important that we stay really grounded. We’re pretty good at that and we’ve got some experienced players who have lived many football seasons and we all know they are rollercoasters with lots of ups and downs.

“You have to navigate through that and not get too high when you win or too low when things don’t go as well.”

When reminded of the fact the Imps are inside the top 50 in the English football pyramid, Cowley added: “It’s a team effort. We’re just cogs in the wheel. It’s been a mighty effort from everyone, inside the club and outside the club. Everyone has worked really hard to get to this place.

“I’ll get excited if we’re still in this position come May. But as we’re still in the middle of August, I’ll keep my feet firmly on the ground.

“But I want to congratulate the supporters because they definitely deserve a club that is right at the top of League One. I thought they were amazing on Saturday.”

The Imps are sitting above some illustrious names in the League One table, but Cowley said: “There are a lot of variables in football and sometimes it’s about playing teams at the right time, and so far we’ve played teams at the right time.

“Blackpool and Fleetwood have looked good so far. Ipswich will be very strong. Peterborough haven’t had a very good start, but they have to be strong with their personnel and obviously Sunderland and Portsmouth are massive clubs.”
