Huddersfield Town 0-1 Lincoln City match report - Imps to host Everton after beating Terriers

Harry Anderson scored the only goal as Lincoln City dumped Huddersfield Town out of the Carabao Cup with a richly deserved 1-0 victory at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Anderson struck 10 minutes into the second half to finally beat goalkeeper Ryan Schofield, who pulled off a string of stunning saves to keep the Championship side, who made 10 changes, in the game.

City made five changes themselves, but they did not appear to weaken Danny Cowley’s side, who, apart from spells at the end of both halves, were on top throughout the first round tie.

The draw for round two, which took place immediately after the game, paired the Imps with Premier League Everton, who will visit Sincil Bank in the week commencing August 26.

The men to come into the side were goalkeeper Grant Smith, new signing Aaron Lewis, Ellis Chapman, Bruno Andrade and John Akinde, with Josh Vickers, Neal Eardley, Michael O’Connor, Jorge Grant and Tyler Walker making way.

The visitors almost surged in front on 15 minutes when, after a flurry of set-pieces, Andrade picked out Michael Bostwick with a deep cross. The defender met it with a firm header, but Schofield tipped it over the bar.

Schofield then almost gifted the Imps a goal with a sloppy clearance which went to Anderson, but the Town keeper redeemed himself with a last-ditch save at the winger’s feet.

On 20 minutes, Jack Payne, who impressed against his former club, found Akinde, who did well to shrug off Jon Gorenc Stankovic and get a shot away, but Schofield blocked it.

Schofield was called into action again seven minutes later when he beat away a long-range drive from Andrade. The rebound fell quickly to Anderson, but he couldn’t connect properly, allowing Schofield to hold his effort.

Anderson certainly did connect well with a shot on 37 minutes, with his stinging drive being tipped behind by the busy Town keeper.

Just before that, Town had their first effort on target – a comfortable save for Smith – which drew ironic cheers from the home fans, who were growing restless.

However, Smith was extended three times just before the break, making excellent saves to deny Juninho Bacuna, twice, and Jaden Brown.

The Imps suffered a blow early in the half when Joe Morrell had to come off, with Michael O’Connor taking his place in midfield.

Undeterred, the Imps pressed forward and almost took the lead when Payne was denied by an outstanding one-handed save from Schofield.

However, City didn’t have to wait much longer for a deserved goal when a deep cross from Harry Toffolo found Anderson, who slotted beyond Schofield with a superb first-time finish with his right foot.

Despite falling behind, Town failed to show any urgency, with the Imps comfortably keeping them at bay.

It should have been 2-0 when Payne, who deserved a goal for his performance, looked to have a tap-in, only to slip in front of goal.

The Terriers finally began to exert some pressure late on. Lively substitute Rajiv van La Parra forced a good save from Smith and, from the resulting corner, Town were adamant they should have had a penalty for handball against O’Connor.

Play continued with a goalbound effort hitting Neal Eardley, who had replaced Bostwick, and going behind for another corner.

Another substitute, Steve Mounie then headed just wide as Huddersfield tried to stay in the competition, but the Imps held on to seal another famous victory.
