Clubs in the Football League have provided their support to significant changes to the summer transfer window, which could come into effect this summer.

Under the new proposals, Championship clubs would have until August 8 to complete any loan or permanent signings while League One and League Two sides would have until August 31.

This season, the deadline for permanent transfers was on August 9, although clubs had until the end of the month to sign players on loan.

Under the new proposals, Championship clubs would have to finalise all permanent a loan signings by the earlier deadline, but could still complete outgoing deals with sides in League One and League Two.

A formal vote will now take place at an Extraordinary General Meeting in April, which will ensure that clubs have enough time to prepare for the changes ahead of the next transfer window opening in June.

“By adopting this approach, EFL Clubs have been given the opportunity to determine the direction of travel, with our priority ensuring that everyone has a clear understanding of the arrangements as soon as possible so as to ensure plans can be put in place for next season,” said EFL Chief Executive Shaun Harvey, who will leave the post at the end of the season.

“This week’s vote indicates strong support for a difference in approach across the Championship and Leagues One and Two and proposals will be finalised ahead of a formal vote at an Extraordinary General Meeting in April.”

If the proposed change is successful, the Championship will follow in the footsteps of the Premier League after a similar move in the top-flight began ahead of the current season.
