Sentencing delayed for man convicted in North Charleston bartender’s shooting death

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The second of two men convicted in the killing of a North Charleston bartender in 2016 will have to wait to learn how long he will stay behind bars.

A jury convicted Jahmal Green, 20, on charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime in the April 20, 2016, shooting death of 43-year-old Eric Brantley.

Green, who was convicted in August 2018, was on the court docket to be sentenced Friday. The Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s Office said on Friday morning that despite the case being listed, the sentencing would be delayed. Then, a solicitor’s office staff member said the sentencing would go on as scheduled.

Late Friday afternoon, Solicitor’s Office spokesperson Naomi Nation confirmed that the sentencing had definitely been delayed. Nation did not have a new date for the sentencing.

Green, who was 17 when he was charged, was acquitted of an additional armed robbery charge.

Brantley, who worked at The Sparrow, was found near his motorcycle in a parking lot on East Montague Avenue.

A second man, De’Andrew Murphy, who was also 17 at the time of the killing, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in November and was sentenced to 30 years in jail including time served.

According to an affidavit, surveillance video showed Green and Murphy coming out of a white Dodge Durango and firing multiple shots at Brantley.

During a preliminary hearing in the case on Sept. 22, 2016, North Charleston Detective Jerry Jellico testified he showed Green a photo of Brantley during an interview at the police station, and the suspect started rapping.

“He began rapping to the victim saying, ‘F*** him, f*** this, I shot him in the head, I shot him in the head,’ and rapping all over, took the picture said, ‘f*** it’ and threw it on the floor,” Jellico testified. "Myself and

Dispatchers say officers responded to a call at 7:27 a.m. Wednesday about a body spotted in the parking lot.

Earlier that morning, at approximately 3:32 a.m., dispatchers had received a call reporting gunshots had been heard in the area.
