Kanye West holds campaign rally in North Charleston Sunday

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC/AP) - Rapper Kanye West held his first campaign rally in North Charleston Sunday afternoon, speaking to supporters about his possible bid for the White House.

West took the stage wearing what appeared to be a tactical vest and the numbers 2020 cut and painted into his hair.

“Do you realize I’m putting my life on the line for the truth right now,” he said. “They are going to run this and try to tell you I’m crazy. The world’s crazy.”

His appearance was marked by a lengthy monologue touching on topics from abortion and religion to international trade and licensing deals.

West used part of his first event since declaring himself a presidential candidate to rant against historical figure Harriet Tubman. West said the Underground Railroad conductor “never actually freed the slaves, she just had them work for other white people.”

West’s comments drew shouts of opposition from some in the crowd.

The rally was held at the Exquis Event Center and was open for registered guests only.

Whether West is actually seeking the nation’s highest office remains a question.
