NEW DELHI : After a wait of over a week, the southwest monsoon has finally arrived in Delhi, bringing moderate spell of rain across various parts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the monsoon has covered entire Delhi on Friday. It has further advanced into some more parts of Rajasthan, remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarkhand and Jammu and Kashmir and some parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.

As on Friday, the northern limit of the monsoon passes through Barmer, Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Rohtak (Haryana), Chandigarh, Una (Himachal Pradesh) and Amritsar (Punjab), as per IMD.

This year, the monsoon has made a delayed onset over Delhi. Last year, it had arrived on June 28 and covered the country 15 days in advance. The sluggish pace has also worsened the deficit which currently stands at 26% for the entire country.

“Conditions are becoming favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into remaining parts of Haryana, Punjab and some more parts of Rajasthan during next 72 hours", stated the weather department, here on Friday.

The low pressure area which formed over North Bay of Bengal on June 30 and moved northwards succeeded in giving a major push to the monsoon, but has now become less marked. However, there is an active trough; a region of low atmospheric pressure associated with rains extends over the northern parts of the country, which favours rains.

“There are strong easterly winds prevailing over northwest India, which are also favorable for the monsoon to progress," said an IMD official.

Rains have brought down the average maximum temperatures in Delhi to 34.2 ℃ on Friday. The cloudy conditions would prevail over the next few days, as light to moderate rains are expected over the region. However, some isolated parts could witness heavy rainfall.
