New Delhi: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is fast expanding its social and electoral base in states where it earlier had little or no political presence. In less than a week, BJP has managed to gain political ground in states like Sikkim and Telangana which have traditionally not been a stronghold of the ruling party.

The developments in Telangana happened on Sunday when more than 60 leaders of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) joined BJP. Similarly, leaders of TDP have also joined BJP in Rajya Sabha after the recent debacle of TDP in the assembly elections.

“If you look at the Congress party or TDP or Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh, these are all family driven party and political leaders have started to realise that these parties will only promote their own political interest and political future of one family. There is no personal growth of political leaders be it Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) or Members of Parliament (MPs) and the organisation has also stopped growing because people want to vote for development and not on the basis of caste and religion," said a senior leader of BJP.

Apart from the recent examples of Telangana and Sikkim, senior leaders of the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) or JDS joined BJP in Karnataka which led to the coalition government losing its majority status in the legislative assembly and allowed BJP to return to power.

Similarly, more than 10 Congress leaders have joined BJP in Goa recently while a couple leaders of Congress have also joined BJP in Maharashtra just months away from the assembly elections which is expected to take place in October-November.

“As more and more people understand the development politics of BJP which focuses on transparency in governance and adopting good practices so that poor and marginalised benefit from various government programmes, more political leaders would want to join the party. People have realised that political parties facing corruption allegations would not get support of people," the BJP leader added.
