This video shows the dramatic moment load bangs can be heard coming from a car completely engulfed in flames on a busy Liverpool junction.

Gasps can be heard from shocked onlookers as the bangs come from the vehicle transformed into a fireball in Old Swan .

The junction of Prescot Road and Green Lane - a major route into Liverpool city centre - had to be closed as firefighters tackled the ferocious blaze around 9am.

Rushour traffiic was caught up in the dramatic scenes as a crew from Toxteth spent around 30 minutes dealing with the fire.

A spokesman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said there was no indication "anybody was seriously injured" in the fire which is not being treated as suspicious with no evidence of foul play.

He said the crew arrived at 9.02am and added: "A fire engine was sent to Prescot Road and Green Lane by the traffic lights. A car was on fire and two hose reel jets were used to extinguish it as police managed the traffic. By 9.35am we had left the scene." 

Merseyside Police confirmed the incident was reported at 9am and it led to a "build up of traffic" and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service was leading the response.

The fire affected public transport with Merseytravel tweeting that all bus services that use Prescot Road and the Old Swan area are being diverted on to West Derby Road and Derby Lane until further notice.
