Liverpool Council has provided a crucial update on the future of its crumbling leisure centres.

A host of the council's Lifestyle centres have suffered problems in recent months - leading to facility closures around the city.

The latest centre to suffer faults was Peter Lloyd in Bankfield Road, where staff were forced to shut the swimming pool this week after a glass door from the sauna shattered.

Other centres suffering full or facility closures at present include Lifestyle centres Austin Rawlinson, Everton Park and the Wavertree Aquatic Centre.

The city council has today issued an update on how long facilities or entire centres will be closed for around the city.

The update is as follows:

For the Liverpool Aquatic Centre in Wavertree , it states: "We have been provided with an update from the contractors that the 50m pool is scheduled to reopen for public use by the end of November 2019."

For Lifestyles Austin Rawlinson , it states: "Ongoing works are continuing and the centre is due to reopen on schedule for the mid to end of September."

For Lifestyles Peter Lloyd , it adds: "The swimming pool is currently closed and works are being carried out to reopen as soon as possible."

And finally, for Lifestyles Everton Park , the update reads: "The gym is currently closed and works are being carried out to reopen week commencing August 26."

A spokesperson added: "Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused."

The closure at Peter Lloyd is the second in recent months - a bust pipe in June also caused it to be temporarily shut.

This came after Liverpool's only Olympic-sized swimming pool was closed after glass shards fell from a light fitting into the pool.

The  Wavertree  pool had to be drained of one million litres of water  after the light shattered  - and a subsequent inspection discovered that floor tiles also needed to be replaced, as well as the light fittings above.

The swimming pool at  Austin Rawlinson Lifestyles Fitness Centre in Speke  also closed earlier this month for essential work, but since then further surveys have revealed pipework that needs to be renewed.

This repair job comes on top of work to replace the main electrical circuit board, repairs to the pool’s pumps, as well as other plant items.
