Snow could hit Liverpool today, following a cold and rainy start.

According to the Met Office, the city can expect scattered showers throughout this morning, with "some falling as sleet or snow over the highest ground."

The weather will remain cold later in the day, with brisk southeastely winds, but the rain is expected to clear this afternoon leaving some bright spells.

Although it will not rain this evening, residents can expect frost and freezing fog patches.

Speaking of weather in the North West today, a Met Office spokesperson said: "Scattered showers through the morning, some falling as sleet or snow over the highest ground.

"Turning brighter through the afternoon with most of the showers clearing. Feeling cold with brisk southeastely winds.

"Staying mostly dry overnight. Cloud breaking up to allow for largely clear skies under which it will turn cold with widespread frost and freezing fog patches forming."

The weather tomorrow (Thursday) is expected to remain cold and cloudy, and will reach a maximum temperature of 7°C.

More rainy and cloudy weather has also been forecast for the remainder of the week - including the weekend.

A spokesperson added: "Cold but bright start on Thursday, otherwise often cloudy into the weekend with a few showers from the east.

"Some overnight frosts and ice, but gradually becoming less cold."
