A young Liverpool fan has helped raise more than £2,000 for charity in memory of tragic Reds supporter Mick Woodburn.

Jacob Whittingham took part in the 10km run at Aintree Racecourse last weekend to generate funds for James' Place, a local charity dedicated to helping men in suicidal crisis.

Popular Liverpool fan Mick was just 29 when he took his own life last year at his home in Norway.

Jacob set up a Just Giving page four days before the run, which took place on Saturday, October 5.

And having set an initial target of £100, more than 100 donations saw him raise almost £2,000 before taking part in the run.

The total had reached £2,420 by Sunday afternoon, with donations still being accepted.

Explaining his reason for the run, teenager Jacob said: "I want to do my bit to help a local charity, and of course remember our good friend Young Mick, who left us just over a year ago in terrible circumstances.

"Suicide is a real issue in today’s society, and I want to do my bit in raising awareness.

"Speaking out is a strength and not a weakness."

James’ Place, which is in Catharine Street in central Liverpool, is an initiative formed by Clare Milford Haven and Nick Wentworth-Stanley after they lost their 21-year-old son, James to suicide.
