Alisson should have taken the ball - and the man

But Liverpool showed title form by grinding out the win says John Aldridge in his latest ECHO column.

The most pleasing thing for me was after Fulham got their goal – which was a one-off mistake from the goalkeeper – they got themselves back into the game and went on to win it.

These games can be tricky but Liverpool showed a lot of spirit to get over the line and afterwards they showed the togetherness of the players and the fans which can be important.

In regards to Fulham’s goal, I think most of the blame has to go to Alisson .

I think from a goalkeeper’s point of view you have to get the ball first and take the player out.

In my day goalkeepers would have seen it as a great opportunity to whack the onrushing opposition player.

If he gets to the ball first then the forward backs out. If Alisson had been a bit bolder, just taken the ball and not looked at the player then he’d have been all right.

How Mane is outstripping Ronaldo, Suarez and Lewandowski

Sadio Mane is in the goalscoring form of his life writes Ian Doyle.

Only Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, who has 18 goals, has netted more times in the top flight this season.

Take away penalties, though, and Mane is the leading scorer in terms of goals from open play.

And that achievement is put into context when compared to top marksmen from across the leading five leagues in Europe.

Only two have scored more goals from open play than Mane.

You again!

Liverpool team-mates Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum might have had a few choice words to say to Fulham’s Reds old boy Ryan Babel today when they met up with him at the Netherlands national team’s training camp.

By the way, could Kopites really have blamed Babel if he’d chosen to celebrate his goal at Craven Cottage, as costly as it might have proven?

I’m not sure at all about this non-celebration trend against former clubs. As long as you don’t rub it in, I think you should enjoy the moment.

Heskey on Salah slump

Emile Heskey has offered some advice to Mohamed Salah to help overcome his recent goal drought.

The Reds returned to the top of the Premier League table on Sunday after beating Fulham, but the Egyptian endured a miserable afternoon in front of goal as his recent slump extended to a seventh game.

And speaking on Sky Sports, Heskey believes Salah is guilty of forcing things in his efforts.

He’s still got 17 goals, so he’s not having that bad a season but he’s probably just trying a little bit too hard.

He’s looking at the season before when he was scoring all these goals, confidence was high, things were ricocheting then going in.

He’s not getting that luck now, but he still wants to get the goals and everyone is still looking at him as that go-to guy for the goals.

There’s times when he should be passing the ball but he’s wanting to score himself. That is the danger.

When you’re going through that patch you need the balance. You need to know when to pass the ball, when to take the shot.

You’ve got to remember we were talking of him last season in the same vein as [Lionel] Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo, so he’s probably got that in his head as well, so he wants to be scoring the goals like they are.

Joao Felix on future

Rumoured Liverpool target Joao Felix has opened up about his future, admitting his reported price-tag is ‘ludicrious’.

The 19-year-old has repeatedly been linked with Jurgen Klopp’s side in recent months after breaking into the Benfica first team, but reportedly has a £105million release clause despite his tender years.

When quizzed about his future by Marca, Felix admitted his desire to play for one of Europe’s biggest teams but insisted he was happy in Portugal before sharing his astonishment at his supposed price-tag.

My dream has always been to play for the big teams and in the biggest competitions, but, as I said, I am here and I am very happy at Benfica. Right now, I’m only thinking about Benfica.

I do not understand the market or values, that is an issue for representatives and presidents. I limit myself to playing.

Former Liverpool target set for Madrid move?

Remember when Liverpool wanted to sign Bayer Leverkusen winger Julian Brandt, before settling for Mohamed Salah instead?

Well the German could be available in the summer but the Reds haven’t shown any signs of rekindling their interest. Yet, anyway.

But according to Bild, both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are scouting Brandt ahead of a potential summer move.

And he has spoken out after being linked with Real, quoted by Kicker.

It’s an honour that I’m being linked with such clubs but as things stand there’s nothing more to it than that.

Should the Reds join the hunt?

Happy Birthday Danny Murphy!

Not going to lie, Danny Murphy was one of my favourite players as a kid. He was actually the first player I got on the back of a shirt.

What’s your favourite Murphy memory? Got to be one of the United winners or Goodison winner, surely?

Karius responds to recent criticism

Loris Karius issued the perfect response to recent criticism as he kept a clean sheet against Goztepe on Saturday.

The German was recently slammed by manager Senol Gunes, while he is currently in a dispute with Besiktas over unpaid wages.

However, the Liverpool loanee put that behind him to help the Turks claim victory.

But it didn’t all go Karius’ way as he was fortunate not to concede another horrendous goal after missing an attempted clearance only for the offside to go up against the Goztepe striker.

Happy with the clean sheet, that didn’t put a dampener on the goalkeeper’s mood as he took to social media to issue his response to his critics after the game.

Simple, short, effective. Fair play, Loris.

Title run-in

And after Liverpool regained top spot in the Premier League title race, here’s how the run-in is looking now.

Why top six clubs are backing Man City

The title race and race for top four is getting rather complex, isn’t it?

Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are all having to balance Premier League with European exploits, while Manchester City also have the FA Cup to concentrate on too.

Man City have a game-in-hand against Manchester United in late-April after losing top-spot, straight after facing Tottenham three times in less than weeks and on the eve of a potential Champions League semi-final.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s home clash with Chelsea is sandwiched in between the Champions League and Europa League quarter-finals.

Oh, and the Reds’ final game of the season against Wolves could be on the eve of an FA Cup Final appearance for the visitors.

But to throw something else into the equation, here’s why the rest of the top six will be backing Man City during the final weeks of the season.

Reds duo in Team of the Week

Garth Crooks is at it again! He’s come out with some mad shouts in his BBC Sport Team of the Week in the past, but his latest one is something else.

First up, Sadio Mane is in. No complaints there. Here’s what the former Tottenham striker said of the forward’s performance.

Sadio Mane of Liverpool celebrates after scoring
Sadio Mane of Liverpool celebrates after scoring

He ran the show in the first half and hit the bar in the second. With Roberto Firmino never quite at the party and Mohamed Salah struggling to hit the back of the net it was left to Sadio Mane to provide the inspiration.

Liverpool got away with this 2-1 away win. It was a spirited performance by the Cottagers and only a mistake by Fulham goalkeeper Sergio Rico let the Reds back into the game. I remember the days when goalkeepers could catch a ball.

Next up though, James Milner. Yes he scored the winner, but he was at fault for Fulham’s equaliser in the first place and was only on the pitch for 15 minutes.

No mention of the midfielder’s error from Garth though. Oh and he’s also played him at centre-back in a back three...

James Milner celebrates after scoring the penalty

Here’s how he justifies the selection...

Here is another substitute that makes my TOTW. There is no doubt about it, Liverpool are not firing on all cylinders but they can call on certain players in a crisis and James Milner is one of those players.

His introduction into the game minutes before the award of the spot kick was crucial. They were gifted a penalty and the one player unmoved by completing the task was Milner.

It puts them top of the table prior to the international break and now Jurgen Klopp must hold his breath and pray his players return unharmed.

Now I love ‘Milly’ as much as the next man but come on, Garth. What game were you watching?

Henderson injury update

Jordan Henderson might have missed Liverpool’s trip to Fulham yesterday but he hasn’t been ruled out of international duty just yet.

Jurgen Klopp expects the midfielder to be available for England’s forthcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro.

Yeah, it’s Hendo and Hendo will go to the national team. I think he will have two or three days at Melwood with his rehab.

But it looks positive, and I think he is in contact with Gareth that when he can train, he goes to the national team. And if he plays, then Gareth will decide.

It was not that serious. And now in three or four days he should be fine.

Robertson withdraws from Scotland squad

But before you start have Alberto Moreno-related heart palpitations, don’t fret. The left-back’s missing the trip after being advised to have a dental operation.

Scotland face San Marino three days later and Andy Robbo’s not been ruled out of that one, so expect him to face Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the month.
