Liverpool pair Gini Wijnaldum and Virgil van Dijk were both on target for the Netherlands in their 4-0 thrashing of Belarus in their opening game of the qualifiers for the 2020 European Championship finals.

Playing in his home city of Rotterdam where he started his career with Feyenoord, midfielder Wijnaldum found the net on 21 minutes as fired a right foot shot from the centre of the box into the roof of the goal following a pass from Memphis Depay.

Captain van Dijk completed the rout for Ronald Koeman's side four minutes from full-time when he headed in from close range following a corner-kick from Depay.

As well as providing a couple of assists, the former Manchester United winger – who was a Liverpool target before he went to Old Trafford – also bagged the other two goals, in the first and 55 minutes of the game with his second coming from the penalty spot after Wijnaldum was fouled in the area.

The Dutch will now prepare for the visit of bitter rivals Germany on Sunday for their second qualifying match to take place at the Amsterdam ArenA, home of Ajax.
