Not quite out of sight, out of mind. But while Liverpool's youngsters will always be given a chance to impress Jurgen Klopp, that they are on a different complex has always made matters that little bit more difficult to catch the eye.

Now, though, an important step has been made in uniting the Reds' first team with those striving to form part of the next generation.

Work has officially started on the £50million new facility at the Academy in Kirkby that will for the first time bring together the senior and youth training set-ups.

Each will have their own separate home building, and their own pitches. However, the possibility of crossover is much more likely when on the same camp.

And, as such, it will be much easier for the Liverpool manager to run the rule over those determined to make the grade.

The success of Trent Alexander-Arnold has proven if you're good enough, you're old enough. More recently, teenagers Curtis Jones and Rafa Camacho were both given an opportunity to impress during pre-season, and have continued to train regularly with the first team.

And Alex Inglethorpe, Liverpool's Academy director, believes simply being able to see the ultimate target of the first team can act as inspiration.

“I think for any young player that's joining the Academy, to be on the same site and to have our facility down there and be able to look at this facility can only be aspirational,” he said.

“As you progress through the years and hopefully make it to the Under-23s and when you get to the U23s you're a step closer, but you're not quite there yet.

“You won't have access to the first-team building but you'll be that bit closer. There's already a very strong relationship. I know in the future that's going to become more solid.

“For any local boy that wants to play for us, to be in the same area as the first team is going to be hugely aspirational for them.

“Whether you're 500 metres away or whether 10 minutes away at Melwood, the key is the relationship between the academy and the first team. We're very, very fortunate that it is strong and we have a manager that believes in the youth and giving them an opportunity.”
