Adam Lallana is confident Liverpool have the squad to ensure their Premier League title challenge isn't compromised by ongoing efforts in Europe.

The Reds resumed their Champions League campaign on Tuesday with a goalless draw at home to Bayern Munich in their round of 16 first leg.

Jurgen Klopp's side travel to Manchester United on Sunday aiming for a victory that will send them three points clear of champions Manchester City at the top of the table.

Last season, the Reds won only three of 12 Premier League games played following a game in the Champions League proper, a run which included a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford last March.

This term, though, they won five of six league matches played immediately after a group game.

And Lallana said: "It all depends if you have the squad to cope with it.

"When we got to the final last year, I remember going to Chelsea at the weekend off the back of the semi-final second leg in Rome and the lads looked zapped both emotionally and physically.

"That's what happens when you succeed and get down to the wire in big tournaments, though. It really does test you physically and tests the strength of your squad. It's why we need everybody we've got here.

"But this is one of the big reasons why I moved to Liverpool, to compete for the Premier League and the Champions League. I still feel there's a lot more to achieve."

Liverpool's goalless draw with Bayern has left the tie in the balance, although the Reds have never before failed to progress in the European Cup having drawn 0-0 in the first leg at home.

"There's more of a cat-and-mouse element about it now plus maybe some mind games with having to play at home first before going away because that can be decisive," said Lallana.

"It's amazing how you can play the same opponent home and away and the games are completely different.

"A good example of that was in our group stage this year when we went to Belgrade. We convincingly beat Red Star at home but then we went away and got beaten there, which shows how difficult it can be playing away from home in the Champions League.

"But we had some outstanding results away from home in the Champions League knockout rounds last year so it's important that we just take one game at a time."

Lallana, speaking to the official LFC matchday programme, believes Liverpool will be bolstered by their previous experience at Bayern.

The Reds won 3-0 in Germany in a warm-up game in August 2017, and Lallana said: "We went to the Allianz Arena in pre-season not too long ago in the Audi Cup.

"We performed well against them that night so that will be something the lads will take into this tie as it's always nice to have been somewhere before and played well. Anything like that, we'll take into the away game."
