Monday marked 15 years since Liverpool won their fifth Champions League title in Istanbul. Was that the club's greatest moment?

Yes, certainly in my lifetime, and while the final itself was glorious in its own right, Istanbul represented the peak of an extraordinary journey the club made in the Champions League that year.

The comeback against Olympiacos and the battles against Juventus and Chelsea had already brought great memories for Liverpool fans, but Istanbul transcended all that, and swept away wider issues threatening the club.

Istanbul concluded a 20-year time period since Liverpool’s last European Cup final, with their Champions League and Premier League drought chipping away at the club’s status in world football.

More immediately, the future of our captain Steven Gerrard was at stake.

All of these elements and more contributed to the most incredible backstory that, combined with that unbelievable night in Istanbul, made Liverpool’s fifth success in the biggest club competition their greatest moment in my eyes, helping maintain that status.

Plenty of people have been watching the Bundesliga of late. Is there any specific player who has caught your eye who could become a Liverpool target?

I think most Liverpool fans would be happy if RB Leipzig became the new Southampton for the club’s future transfers!

I will not mention ‘you know who’ yet, but I have been impressed by the extremely versatile Lukas Klostermann.

Capable of playing both full-back positions and now playing as part of a three-man defence for Leipzig, Klostermann would be a superb addition to an already superb defence.

He has the potential to compete with both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson and provide another option alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Already on Liverpool’s books and exciting in short spells is Taiwo Awoniyi, currently on loan at Mainz.

While breaking into the Liverpool side will be extremely difficult, Awoniyi can only continue to work hard and improve his game as a young player, but he has made an encouraging start since the Bundesliga’s return.

Timo Werner scored a hat-trick over the weekend. How likely do you think it is that he becomes a Liverpool player this summer?

I hope it's this summer, and I do believe Timo Werner will become a Liverpool player in the future.

Whether that happens this transfer window or in the following year's (depending on how the structures of future seasons and windows are arranged) depends on how the devastating COVID-19 pandemic plays out.

Werner is perfect for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool and the Reds will weigh up all the circumstances and come to the best conclusion for a deal, but it really is a ‘wait and see’ for the timing.

Jurgen Klopp will have been at Liverpool for five years in October. Can you sum up the job he has done at Anfield so far?

Klopp is Liverpool’s most inspirational manager since Bill Shankly.

He has taken Liverpool back to the top in a way only previously achieved by Shankly - the German, unquestionably, has turned Liverpool fans from doubters to believers.

Recently, five years had passed since Gerrard’s final game in that miserable 6-1 loss at Stoke City.

After narrowing missing out on the Premier League title a year earlier in devastating circumstances, the thought of winning the title again after the Stoke thrashing never seemed further away.

Jurgen has led a complete overhaul of Liverpool’s fortunes and brought the Reds to the verge of a first league title for 30 years. Long may he remain in the Anfield dugout!

Any other business?

Given the current circumstances, there will in all likelihood be little transfer business this summer from both Liverpool and all clubs across football.

However, undoubtedly Klopp, his staff and the likes of Michael Edwards will be looking at how best to rejuvenate the squad in following summer, with a keen emphasis on continuing the formula that saw Liverpool return to the pinnacle of world football.

Liverpool avoided numerous high-figure transfers before the pandemic and very few are likely to take place for some time after it, at least not immediately.

Maintaining a pathway for youth and a strong British presence that has characterised all great Liverpool sides will follow as we move into the next stage of Klopp’s reign at Anfield.
