Significant injuries resulted from a crash between a Ram 1500 truck and a Howell school bus Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019 on Burkhart Road at Interstate-96.

A Thursday morning crash between a pickup truck and a school bus sent a Lansing man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The man is now listed in stable condition, Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy said Friday.

Murphy said Agustin Santos Bautista Sanchez, 47, was driving a 1999 Dodge Ram eastbound on Burkhart Road at the M-59 and Interstate 96 interchange in Howell Township. At about 6:15 a.m., Sanchez lost control on the overpass and crossed the center line, hitting a 2008 International school bus operated by Howell Public Schools. He was transported to Sparrow Hospital with life-threatening injuries but is now in stable condition.

A passenger in the truck, who Murphy identified as Lansing resident Christian Enrique Fernandez Vargas, 27, was also taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Police say no kids were on board the bus at the time of the crash.

The bus driver, who Murphy identified as Kevin Heinz Angerstein, a 51-year-old Howell resident, was transported to St. Joseph Mercy Livingston in stable condition on Thursday.

M-59 at I-96 was closed in both directions and ramps to I-96 were closed for about four hours due to the crash.

All occupants were wearing seat belts, according to police. The crash remains under investigation by the Livingston County Major Crash Team.

Murphy said slick conditions caused by snowfall created dangerous road conditions that contributed to multiple crashes in Livingston County Thursday morning, including one fatal crash.
