A Spring Valley man who had sexual relations with a child for several years has been sentenced to 12 years in state prison, acting Rockland County District Attorney Kevin Gilleece said Wednesday.

Luis Miguel Lopez-Ruiz, 35, was also given 20 years of post-release supervision after pleading guilty in May to one count of first-degree course of sexual conduct against a child. Additionally, he must register as a sex offender once he's released, prosecutors said.

Between October 2014 and December 2018, Lopez-Ruiz sexually abused a child who had been under the age of 13, prosecutors said in a statement. The repeated abuse happened in the Town of Ramapo and continued until the victim was 15.

“This sentence imposed is more than deserved considering the frightening ordeal of sexual violence that went on for years,” said Gilleece. “The defendant is a dangerous predator who destroyed a child’s innocence.”
