Rickey McGill, Iona basketball star and Spring Valley native, signs with Greek team

After leaving his mark at both Spring Valley High School and at Iona College, Rickey McGill is taking the next step of his basketball career.

The the 6-foot-2, 185-pound guard turned pro by signing with Greek team Panionios, according to his Twitter account.

Panionios, which is based in Athens, is a long-time member of the Greek Basket League, the top tier league in the country and one of the strongest leagues in Europe.

Earlier this offseason, McGill took part in a pre-draft workout with the NBA's Sacramento Kings.

After struggling to get playing time in his freshman season, McGill left behind a strong legacy at Iona. He was the team's starting point guard for the past three seasons, and finished his senior season with per-game averages of 15.8 points, 4.8 assists and 4.5 rebounds. He also shot 35.1% on 3-pointers.

McGill is also the only player in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference history to win four conference titles.

At Spring Valley, he graduated second on Rockland County's all-time scoring list with 1,463 points. In his senior year, he led Spring Valley to a 23-2 record and an appearance in the state final four, and was also named Section 1's Mr. Basketball. In the regional final, he hit a memorable three-point buzzer-beater to send the Tigers past Saugerties.
