Greater Manchester came together tonight for what could be the last Clap for Carers tribute.

From Ramsbottom to Romiley, households have stood on their doorsteps and streets to honour NHS and care workers with applause, and banging pots and pans, at 8pm on Thursdays.

Tonight's tribute was the tenth since the coronavirus pandemic lockdown was put in force - and it could be the last.

Yet despite the uncertainty, residents across the region joined forces once more in praise of our hero health workers on the frontline.

Elsewhere, the Ministry of Defence tweeted a video of soldiers applauding at homes and abroad.

The weekly event looks to be coming to an end after the woman who created it spoke out about why she believes it's time to stop.

Annemarie Plas, from London, said she has been 'overwhelmed' by the support for Clap for Carers, but feels it's better to stop while it is at its 'peak.'

This week she has spoken out about wanting the show of support to finish, amid concerns it has become too political.

"I think it's good to have the last of the series [tonight], because to have the most impact I think it is good to stop it at its peak," she said.

"Without getting too political, I share some of the opinions that some people have about it becoming politicised.

"I think the narrative is starting to change and I don't want the clap to be negative."

There have been suggestions Clap for Carers could become an annual event.

Ms Plas said the next one should take place in 2021 to mark a year since the outbreak.
