Boris Johnson has been re-elected as Britain's prime minister following a historic night for the Conservative Party.

The Conservatives have won a landslide majority in the 2019 General Election with several former Labour seats turning blue across Greater Manchester.

The prime minister will be now be expected to follow through on promises made before the election campaign began.

Here's four things set to be delivered in Greater Manchester under Boris Johnson's leadership.

1. North Manchester General Hospital rebuild

During a visit to North Manchester General Hospital in September, Mr Johnson promised that the city's ambitious plans to redevelop the aging site would get the go ahead.

The prime minister reportedly went even further with his language during the visit by telling a surgeon that North Manchester would 'get a new hospital'.

The Crumpsall site is in line to get millions of pounds in ‘seed funding’ to get the update started within 10 years, according to the prime minister.

Mr Johnson said he expected the plans to cost in the region of £500m.

"They will have to take down those old Victorian buildings, they will have to build a fantastic new site," he said. "It will cost a lot of money, but we have got to get started."

The Conservatives have committed to building six new hospitals nationally.

2. Expansion of Metrolink to Stockport and Bolton

Just this month, the Tories promised a long-term pot of funding to improve transport infrastructure in Manchester.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps did not say exactly how much it would be - but it's been suggested that the money will be used to expand the Metrolink tram service out to Stockport and Bolton, two areas that have severely struggled with congested Northern Rail services.

A share of £4.2bn - split between eight areas - is set to be given to the mayor and local leaders, who in all likelihood would then use it according to the masterplan set out by Andy Burnham in the summer.

3. 'HS3' rail link from Manchester to Leeds

In his first major speech since becoming prime minister in July, Boris Johnson promised a high speed rail link between Manchester and Leeds.

He said the plans, part of the proposed Northern Powerhouse Rail link network, were a key part of unleashing the productive power of the north.

"By better connecting the North’s great cities we’ll help support millions of families and businesses and level up opportunities for everyone, regardless of where they live," he said.

4. A London-style bus network

Boris Johnson: self-declared 'bus nut'

Back in October Boris Johnson suggested Manchester was in line to get a 'London-style' bus network.

The government announced that next year's spending review would set out our plans to support local authorities which want to pursue London-style bus systems in their areas.

The Conservative manifesto promises bus, tram and train services "as good as London's" with more frequent services, more electrification and smarter ticketing.
