A man has died after being struck by a tram in Oldham.

The incident happened near Shaw and Crompton Metrolink stop at around 5.55am on Friday morning.

Emergency services attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are investigating how the man came to be on the tram tracks.

A section of the Rochdale via Oldham line is blocked while the investigation takes place.

There are no tram services running between Oldham Mumps and Rochdale Town Centre.

Passengers are being advised to use their tram tickets on local bus services.

Anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 395 of 17/01/2020, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Services running again

Metrolink services are now running again between Oldham Mumps and Rochdale Town Centre.

There are still some delays and passengers can continue to use their tickets on local bus services.

Statement from North West Ambulance Service

A spokeswoman for NWAS said:

We got a call to Beal Lane, in Oldham.

“We sent two rapid response vehicles to the scene.”

There are two police scenes, one at the Shaw and Crompton stop and another on Bullcote Lane.

The closure of Shaw and Crompton station has sparked delays to other Metrolink services.

Services on the East Didsbury Line are operating between East Didsbury to Oldham Mumps and East Didsbury to Deansgate Castlefield on an alternating six minute frequency.

The Rochdale via Oldham line is still partially blocks while police investigate.

Incident referred to Rail Accident Investigation Branch


TfGM’s Head of Metrolink, Danny Vaughan, said:

Earlier this morning a man was involved in a collision with a tram between Derker and Shaw and Crompton tram stops.

“Emergency services were quickly in attendance but sadly could not save him.

“This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this deeply upsetting time.

“We will also be working with the operator to ensure the necessary support is put in place for the driver and any other staff affected by what has happened.

“Police are currently dealing with this incident, which has also been referred to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch, and we will do whatever we can to support either agency in any subsequent investigation.

“Services are currently suspended between Oldham Mumps and Rochdale Town Centre while police remain at the scene.

“Customers are able to use their tickets and passes on local bus and train services and I’d like to thank them for their patience and understanding this morning.”

Road closures

The following roads are shut while an investigation takes place:

  • Bullcote Lane and Cop Road in both directions closed due to emergency services incident at the tram tracks just east of Heyside Park.
  • Further north, Beal Lane is also closed at the tram tracks near the Yodel depot.

Trams travelling from the city centre towards Oldham are also delayed.

Police statement

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement:

Shortly before 5.55am this morning (Friday 17 January 2020), police were called to reports that a tram had collided with a man near to the Shaw and Crompton tram stop.

“The man has sadly been pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish how the man came to be on the tracks.

“The tram line in the immediate area is currently closed. Please follow @OfficialTfGM for travel information.

“Anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 395 of 17/01/2020, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
