This is one of a number of new signs being erected in Manchester city centre to help visitors get around.

Beautifully designed in a turquoise and navy colour scheme, the map directs tourists to some of our most popular attractions such as the Northern Quarter, Manchester Cathedral and the Arndale Centre.

There's just one problem... it's facing the wrong way.

Eagle-eyed Mancunian John Harlow spotted the error as he was passing the ongoing maintenance work at Shudehill Interchange.

"Nice new street signs around Manchester, shame this one on Shudehill is the wrong way round," he tweeted at the council.

The new sign directs people to walk straight ahead for around 4mins to get into the Northern Quarter, when in fact it's behind them.

Similarly, an arrow points to the right for the Arndale Centre, when it should be to the left.

The arrows point the exact opposite way to attractions such as the Northern Quarter

When a Manchester Evening News reporter visited to take a picture on Thursday afternoon, workmen on site were quick to point out that they had already realised the mistake.

They allowed us to take a picture from the other side of the sign, on which the arrows are all pointing the right way.

The fault, therefore, appears to lie with the design, rather than those who put it in place.

The same map has been used for both sides, even though they are facing opposite ways.

We were told the mistake will be corrected on Monday.

In the meantime, it has been covered up to save any further embarassment.

According to city centre spokesperson Pat Karney, both Manchester council, Transport for Greater Manchester and Marketing Manchester are responsible for the slip-up.

"I will be having a word with all three managers of the 'Cock Up Department' at those three organisations," said Mr Karney.

"They have brought shame and embarrassment on Manchester! We are determined to get this right.

"It's important we look after our tourists, particularly in light of Brexit.

"We'll make sure it's sorted."
