There are no signs of summer arriving in Greater Manchester yet - with even more rain to come on Saturday.

Forecasters at the Met Office have said temperatures will remain cool until the weekend.

The region appears to have avoided any serious flooding overnight, although flood barriers were in place around Bury Bridge, Warth Bridge, Ramsbottom and Hardy's Gate Bridge as a precaution after a weather warning was issued.

Manchester was still under the yellow weather alert for rain until midday, but forecasters said showers have started to ease.

According to the Met Office website the early rain will gradually clear and will be followed by brighter spells.

However, there will be some scattered showers to the south of the region.

Temperatures are expected to reach highs of around 14C - below average for this time of year.

Overnight it will be drier than recent days, with patchy cloud and some scattered showers, although there could be some more persistent rain pushing into southern parts by dawn.

There will be a mixture of bright and sunny spells on Friday with scattered showers.

This will then be followed by a spell of more persistent rain, which could be heavy at times, travelling from the south of the region.

The weather is still going to remain unsettled into the weekend.

There will be spells of showers, although there will be far less of a deluge compared to earlier in the week.

Temperatures are also expected to warm up slightly and reach highs of around 17C, which is back in line with the average for June.

Meteorologists have said by the middle of next week it is going to start to look a bit more like summer and there will be some sunny spells to look forward to.

Oli Claydon, a spokesman for the Met Office, said: "Thursday will be a cloudy and showery day. In Manchester during the day temperatures will be around 14C - so feeling chilly and cold again.

It's going to be wet and windy for most of the week.

"Tonight there will be some dry conditions. It will be cloudy tonight, but another band of rain is moving from the south west. It will weaken as it goes through the day. First thing it will be grey, but there will be bright spells by Friday afternoon and an improvement since the last few days. Temperatures will be 16C tomorrow.

"On Saturday it will remain generally unsettled but nothing compared to the last few days and it will be a touch warmer. There will be more cloud and showers, they will clear by the evening. Similar on Sunday, but with more wind around.

"It is looking better by the middle of next week. It will be calmer. There is sunshine on the horizon, but a few more wet days to get through first."
