Astonishing levels of rain fell across Greater Manchester on Saturday.

The extraordinary deluge saw more than 50mm of rain in Manchester, close to the average MONTHLY rainfall of 58mm.

Littleborough, one of the worst hit areas, was lashed with an incredible 91mm - nearly four inches - of rain on Saturday.

The area only usually gets 92mm across all of March, according to Met Office figures.

While the heavy rainfall has eased off this morning (Sunday), further showers could fall intermittently throughout the day.

A flood alert is still in place for the areas around the River Irwell.

An update from the Environment Agency said: "River levels on the River Irwell continue to fall. Further showers are forecast throughout tomorrow Sunday 17th March.

"We will continue to monitor the forecast and issue updates if necessary. Please be aware of your surroundings and keep up-to-date with the current situation."

The wet weather saw rivers burst their banks, main roads underwater and parts of town centres submerged on Saturday.

Images taken in Manchester city centre showed the Irwell at very high levels with lower lying footpaths and outdoor stairways already underwater.

Pictures taken in Salford near to the Lowry Hotel showed handrails and steps disappearing into the water.

A view looking down the Irwell from Spinningfields Bridge towards New Quay Street revealed a fast flowing and high river.

The Mark Addy pub, which has been closed since the disastrous Boxing Day floods in 2015, looked once again to be under threat at its location in a precarious position next to the River Irwell.

The Manchester Ship Canal also burst its banks near Cornbrook and Ordsall lane with pictures posted on social media showing flooded walkways.

Local weather expert @ChadWeather, tweeting a Sunday morning forecast , said: "Morning all. The radar this SundayMorning sums up most of the day with bright spells and wintry showers across the region. Feeling colder today with some snow on the tops and some of these showers could be thundery with hail. Max 8°C"
