This is the moment a Salford fugitive was arrested by police in Spain.

Officers from the country's Policia Nacional raided an apartment block in Barcelona and found Jamie Rothwell, 33, who had been wanted since October 2019 when a European Arrest Warrant was issued.

In footage released by the Spanish police heavily armed officers are seen entering the flat in Sant Adria del Besos.

Mr Rothwell is handcuffed while a detailed search is carried out of the property.

He was found on Sunday after a joint investigation by Greater Manchester Police, the National Crime Agency, and the Spanish police.

As reported in the Manchester Evening News Mr Rothwell was  arrested on suspicion of conspiring to murder two men.

He was also wanted for two counts of conspiring to commit grievous bodily harm.

In the raid Mr Rothwell was one of two men arrested. He is seen barefoot sat on a sofa in grey tracksuit bottoms. He is then seen wearing a black T-shirt being escorted from the block by two oficers. The second man arrested is a Dutch national.

Matt Horne, the National Crime Agency’s deputy director of investigations said: “The arrest of a fugitive over exceptionally serious allegations is a great result.

"It's an example of how the agency and our international partners work to protect the public, and even during coronavirus when there've been greater hurdles to overcome, the NCA has remained relentless in leading the UK's fight against serious crime."

Detective Chief Inspector Carl Jones, of Greater Manchester Police’s major incident team, said: 'This arrest is part of Greater Manchester Police’s ongoing investigation into a dispute between two rival organised crime groups in Salford in 2015.

“Operation Leopard is a collaborative operation which utilises specialists from GMP’s major incident team and serious and organised crime group.

“This arrest wouldn’t have been possible without an excellent working relationship between GMP, the Crown Prosecution Service, National Crime Agency and the Spanish authorities.

The arrest was carried out with the help of elite Spanish police Special Operations Group GEO, who are often called on to rescue hostages or take out terrorists.
