South Manchester residents have expressed their anger after discovering rubbish left in a popular park after a bank holiday party.

Residents using Highfield Country Park in Levenshulme discovered the party rubbish including broken glass, food wrappers, and gas canisters while using the park on Tuesday morning (May 26).

There were also packages with white residue left on them.

“I went on my morning run and went past the picnic area and saw it all,” resident Sophie Sveinsson told the M.E.N.

“I go there daily for a run and I take my kids there for their daily exercise.

"It was horrible, there were little bags of white residue in them, a lot of gas canisters, and hundreds of cans and glasses.

“There was broken glass everywhere and hundreds of cigarette butts. There was a fire still burning so it definitely happened recently.”

Levenshulme resident Sophie Sveinsson filmed the mess in the park as she asked for people to help her tidy it up

Sophie saw the mess in the park at around 9am and started tidying it up.

She was joined by two other residents who were in the park at the time.

“I can’t turn a blind eye on stuff like that,” she added.

“Considering there was a bin three metres away, they could have tidied it up using the plastic bags they had left there.

“I thought I needed to tidy it up before the kids got there. A lot of children have been using that area for their daily exercises.

“Everyone’s finding it hard right now but endangering little children because of a selfish need to party is something that I will stand up against.”

The dumped rubbish was carefully tidied up and put to the side after Sophie received help from other residents

Sophie added that a lot of the local residents take pride in the area, and believes anyone else would have done the same if they had seen it before her.

“People really care about the area. If it wasn’t me, someone else would have done it.”

Other residents reported on social media seeing a large group of young people drinking beer and playing music in the park on bank holiday Monday.

Elsewhere, large groups of people were also seen gathering and drinking in Ancoats on Monday.

Lockdown measures were eased slightly in England earlier this month allowing the public to meet up outside with one other person from outside their household, all while observing social distancing.
