A drunken yob has been spared jail after he admitted carrying out a 4am rampage in McDonald's that left him covered in blood.

Craig Smith, 27, had been drinking with friends before he ended up in a branch of the fast food chain on Ordsall Lane, Salford, near the city centre in the early hours.

Manchester Magistrates' Court heard manager Jack Ryan was on overnight duty and saw Smith come in at around 2.30am.

He ordered some food and initially sat on his own, but then spotted an elderly homeless man who was drinking from a bottle of vodka, the court heard.

Smith, of Parrswood Road, Manchester, befriended the man and also began drinking from the vodka bottle, the court was told.

At around 4am, Smith began 'causing a nuisance', prosecutor Miss Tess Kenyon told the court.

"He went over and started speaking to Mr Ryan behind the counter," Miss Kenyon said.

"Initially, he was just behaving oddly.

"Then he started to be abusive, calling him a 'w*****'."

At the same time, Mr Ryan realised the elderly gentleman who had been drinking the vodka was no longer responsive, the court heard.

The manager decided to call an ambulance which angered Smith.

"Smith started to follow Mr Ryan around behind the counter," said Miss Kenyon.

"Mr Ryan didnt want to aggravate the situation while he called an ambulance.

"The defendant was asking 'who are you calling?'"

Eventually, Mr Ryan became so concerned by Smith's aggressive behaviour he told all the rest of the staff to lock themselves in the staff room and asked for police to attend as well as the ambulance service.

Smith continued to be aggressive and began helping himself to chips and a bottle of sauce, the court heard.

He then sat down again and continued to direct rude hand gestures and comments towards Mr Ryan.

Smith eventually left and Mr Ryan immediately went to lock the main restaurant door, the court heard.

Smith reacted by kicking the door until the glass smashed and Mr Ryan feared he was trying to get back into the McDonald's to hurt him.

"By the time police arrived, the defendant had pulled glass out of the door and was trying to climb through," said Miss Kenyon.

"His hands were covered in blood and he was asking Mr Ryan to open the second door."

Police arrested Smith at the scene and had to take him straight to Salford Royal hospital for treatment to the cuts on his hands, the court heard.

Smith admitted a public order offence, burglary and causing £1,000 worth of criminal damage to the McDonald's.

The district judge sentenced Smith to 16 weeks in prison, suspended for twelve months, telling him he was very lucky not to be going straight behind bars.

"I hope you realise how appalling your behaviour was and how frightened staff in the McDonald's were," he said.

Smith must also pay £500 compensation.
