The M62 was closed this morning after a woman fell from Scammonden Bridge.

The woman, in her twenties and from Greater Manchester, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The motorway was shut between junction 22 (Rishworth Moor) and junction 24 ( Ainley Top ) at approximately 12am this morning, the Examiner Live reports.

Both westbound and eastbound carriageways were closed after the woman fell from the bridge above the motorway.

West Yorkshire Police  tweeted: "Police incident on the  M62  , carriageway closed in both directions from J22 to J24 – will be closed for some time. Please avoid the area where possible."

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward. Anyone who saw the incident is asked to call West Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting WYP-20190615-1931.

Highways England tweeted:

Drivers and passengers were stuck on the motorway for several hours.

Traffic was later directed off the motorway, according to one witness.

The stretch of the M62 reopened at around 8am, Highways England said.
