Tyrone Dobbs found out the brutal truth about his tragic past on tonight's Coronation Street.

In a frank showdown with his maternal grandmother Evelyn Plummer Tyrone, played by Alan Halsall, was stunned to learn she had left him on the steps of a police station when he was just three weeks old.

Evelyn revealed his mum Cassandra was a drug addict and she had thought it was kindest thing to do to abandon the baby for the sake of her daughter so that she could make a fresh start.

"I had to let you go for the sake of Cassie, your mother," she said tearfully.

"Your mother was a drug addict."

Evelyn also revealed that Ty's grandfather died of a brain haemorrhage and she felt unable to cope with a newborn baby herself after the tragedy of losing her husband and her daughter's addiction.

Cassie went missing and contacted Evelyn from Liverpool "at death's door."

Evelyn, played by Maureen Lipman, worked for 18 months to get her clean and it was decided that Cassie should made a fresh start in South Africa.

"I can't lie to you. If the same situation happened again I'd probably do the same thing," she confessed.

"What, knowing what you know now?" raged Tyrone.

"Yeah because a three week old baby was less helpless than my daughter," she replied.

Tyrone was left devastated by the revelations and told Evelyn that he hoped he had "found a new Vera" in his grandmother.

"My heart is going out to Tyrone!!" said one fan on Twitter.

Ryan tweeted: "What a shock for Tyrone, to find out his mom used to be a drug addict!"

And another viewer said: "Poor Tyrone finding out Evylen what she was like."

Tyrone's past has been shrouded in mystery, and he wanted answers after finding Evelyn with her other grandson James who revealed she abandoned him as a baby, and not his mum as he was led to believe.

Evelyn arrived in Weatherfield last September when Tyrone discovered his parents Darren and Jackie were not his real mum and dad after all.

He wept after being reunited with Darren after almost 20 years, and being cruelly informed that he couldn’t have been Jackie’s child.

“I like you Tyrone but you’re not my kid,” he said bluntly.

“I hope you find out where you’re from.”

Tyrone traced Evelyn through social media, but was dismayed to discover that Cassandra died in South Africa some years before.

Evelyn initially wanted nothing to do with Tyrone, but when she lost her home and with nowhere to stay ended up at Number 9 Coronation Street with her long-lost grandson, much to his wife Fiz 's dismay.

She's swiftly made enemies on the cobbles, including Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) after attempting to steal from the corner shop, Ken Barlow (William Roache) after making him lose a pub quiz, and even suggesting Father Christmas is not real to the children Hope, Ruby and Joseph.
