Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson is on course to break the Premier League's assist record for a goalkeeper.
Under Pep Guardiola, Ederson has been a revelation at City, showcasing weekly his freakish technical ability.
Upon arrival in Manchester, Guardiola required a goalkeeper that could deliver his style of play and Ederson was his chosen man after Claudio Bravo had a poor first season.
Since his £35M signature was captured the Brazilian has stunned the division with his ability. It’s rare a goalkeeper is as comfortable with the ball at his feet as he is with it in his hands, but Ederson is no ordinary goalkeeper.
City’s number one oozes class and composure when the ball is on the deck and he arguably wouldn’t look out of place alongside David Silva, Fernandinho and Kevin De Bruyne in midfield if the gloves were to come off.
That, of course, would never happen but there is one-way Ederson could fulfil his creative potential. While his main aim is to prevent the opposition from scoring, Ederson has proved he can also be a factor in helping City to score.
He already has two assists to his name, with the first coming in a 6-1 thrashing of Huddersfield, in August, at the start of the campaign.
Ederson took the Ethiad by surprise that day, spraying a 60-yard pinpoint pass to Sergio Aguero who opened the scoring and his second assist came more recently, as City beat Schalke 3-2 in the Champions League.
Surprisingly, the club that has the most goalkeepers assists in the Premier League are Arsenal, having eight goals assisted by their goalkeepers.
City play in a similar fashion that Arsenal were once famous for and that is a good omen, if Ederson is wanting to register more assists.
In total, 84 Premier League goals have been assisted by goalkeepers and currently Paul Robinson holds the accolade of having tallied the most with five assists.
Closely behind Robinson are Pepe Reina, David Seaman and Jussi Jaaskelainen whom have all recorded four Premier League assists each.
While Ederson has two assists, one has come in European competition and therefore it’s not entered into the equation this time.
However, with one Premier League assist already to his name and still being only 25, there is no doubt Ederson could end his career with the most assists by a goalkeeper, in the Premier League.
While City fans will be hoping for simply more clean sheets, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Ederson could combine clean sheets with a touch of magic at the other end of the pitch.
