If Liverpool legend Phil Thompson is to be believed, there is only one Manchester City player as good as Virgil van Dijk.

The Liverpool defender has had a brilliant season, and is one of the main reasons behind Liverpool's title challenge against City this season.

And Thompson, writing in the Times, believes Van Dijk should win the Player of the Year award at the end of the season.

He goes further, claiming the only player who can rival Van Dijk is City midfielder Fernandinho for an award at the end of the season.

Thompson explained: "Nobody has been like Virgil this season and people are talking about him as player of the year. It would be great if a defender won that award because it would be some statement.

"He has rated as a 9/10 each week and, for me, the only one who can come near him for the accolade is Fernandinho at Manchester City."

However, there is just one problem - Fernandinho hasn't even been City's best player this season, let alone the Premier League's.

While Fernandinho has proved hugely important to Pep Guardiola's side this season, and will be even harder to replace, there are other players who would be better placed to challenge Van Dijk for the end-of-season awards.

Center-back Aymeric Laporte has barely put a foot wrong all season, while Bernardo Silva has transformed himself from rotation player to first choice ahead of Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva.

Then there is the undoubted class of Sergio Aguero, who continues to break records in understated fashion.

So Thompson is right that Van Dijk should be considered for Player of the Year, but to suggest just one City player can rival him is quite the claim.
