Manchester City are currently behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race going into the final international break of the season, but it's a position City have fought back from before and they'll need to do so again to claim the title.

Liverpool leapfrogged over City into the top spot on Sunday after just about squeezing past Fulham to beat the relegation strugglers 2-1.

It meant the Reds went two points ahead, though they have played a game more as City were facing Swansea City in the FA Cup quarter-finals and don't have their game in hand until they play in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford on April 24.

Usually this stage in the season is when the Premier League begins to truly take shape and solidify, with the majority of games played teams tend to get rooted in their position.

Liverpool supporters will be able to take solace in the fact that the team that goes into the final international break of the season top of the league tends to stay there.

According to Opta, out of every single Premier League season the team that has been top on March 19 has gone on to win the title 18 out of 26 times.

But City are a team that tend to buck the trend.

In City's first two Premier League triumphs they were not top at this stage.

In 2012 Manchester United were at the summit while City were four points behind in second and in 2014 Chelsea were top and the Blues were miles away in fourth, six points off the leaders -  and we all know how City went on to claim the crown in that season.

It was only in last season's all dominating victory that City have been top at this stage of the season and won the trophy, as they were 16 points clear of United.

A lot has been mentioned that in all of Pep Guardiola's league victories he's never had to go toe-to-toe with a serious contender.

While not strictly true he has certainly never been involved in a title race quite as tight as this but a good number of his players have.

Vincent Kompany, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Fernandinho have all got the experience of being in a tense and brutal title race and that experience could give City the egde as they look to win one once again.
