Manchester United need to put in a much-improved performance on Wednesday after the weekend horror show at Everton.

United were second best in every aspect at Goodison Park, and have now conceded seven goals without reply in their last two games.

However, with Tottenham, Arsenal, and Chelsea all dropping points this weekend, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men are still in the race for a top four finish.

But in order to finish the season strongly, they must improve markedly on recent performances, and that could mean a shake-up of personnel following an abject performance from many first team regulars.

Ashley Young, Nemanja Matic and Anthony Martial came in for particular criticism from fans for their performances at Goodison Park, but with such a free-scoring City team in opposition, Solskjaer may think twice before making wholesale changes.

In defence, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof are likely to be the only fit centre-backs with Phil Jones an injury doubt. Lindelof has been deployed at right-back in the last week to accommodate Ashley Young on the left in the absence Luke Shaw.

But Shaw has served his suspension now, and will return on the left, allowing Young to move back onto the right.

Some supporters may want to see Diogo Dalot at right-back, but with Raheem Sterling in the form of his life, Young may be a steadier option who is more familiar with his former England teammate's threat.

In a field of terrible performances, Nemanja Matic was arguably the worst United player at Everton, which could mean a return for Scott McTominay.

The youngster was unfazed by the recent double-header with Barcelona, and deserves a chance to play against City. Together with Fred, he can offer the energy Matic lacks to counteract the City midfield.

Paul Pogba was another player accused of underperforming at the weekend, but on his day he is the best player United have, so must be given the chance to show that on the big stage. He turned up last season to temporarily delay City's title coronation, and United will be hoping for a similar impact.

Upfront, Romelu Lukaku has been flanked by Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard in previous big games. It hasn't always been a successful tactic, but is probably the best option Solskjaer has.

With Anthony Martial completely anonymous last time out, and Alexis Sanchez a shadow of the player he was when United beat City to his signature, Rashford and Lingard must show their qualities after some disappointing form.

There have been calls for youngsters like Tahith Chong, Mason Greenwood and James Garner to feature in the matchday squad, and there may be room on the bench. But United must be at their best to beat this City side, and this is not the game to be experimenting with youth team players.

Predicted United XI vs Man City: De Gea; Young, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw; Fred, Pogba, McTominay; Rashford, Lukaku, Lingard
