Louis van Gaal on transfer disappointment

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has spoken about what he believes were failings in the transfer market during his time at Old Trafford.

The veteran Dutchman believes the board let him down by struggling to bring in the calibre of player he desired over the course of his two-season stay in Manchester.

In an interview with Voetbal International, Van Gaal said: “Manchester United did not have the qualities to become champions and had an outdated selection with ten players over 30, five over 35."

Van Gaal claimed his plans to “rejuvenate” the squad were left unfulfilled, with none of his chosen transfer targets signed.

On the whole, the decorated former manager believes his time at Old Trafford would have been much more successful had he been given the players he felt the club needed.

United above City in rich list

Manchester United have once again been named the Premier League’s wealthiest side, ahead of rivals Manchester City and Liverpool in KPMG’s annual club valuation report.

United remain the second-richest club, behind Spanish giants Real Madrid, and are valued at £2.84billion, representing a reduction of two-percent on last year’s figure.

Liverpool are listed fifth-richest in Europe, valued at £2.26billion, while City are worth marginally less at £2.21billion.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side are one of eight Premier League clubs listed in this year’s rich list.

Lescott backs Grealish move

Ex-Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott has supported the idea of Jack Grealish leaving Aston Villa amid interest from Manchester United.

Lescott was speaking to The Beautiful Game Podcast, and suggested Villa supporters would not begrudge Grealish if he made the decision to switch Villa Park for Old Trafford.

“For him to move now, it’s not a bad decision. I don’t think any Villa fan would discourage him from leaving,” Lescott said.

Once of United’s rivals Manchester City, Lescott urged Grealish to think about his future, implying any transfer deal should be wrapped up early and that the club should not stand in his way.

Grealish – now 24 years-old – has spent his entire career with the Midlands club, having joined as a youngster in 2001. He has scored seven Premier League goals this season, and assisted a further six for a struggling Villa side.
