Gary Neville has praised Manchester United target James Maddison and has tipped him to be a big success for England in the coming years.

United were interested in the Leicester midfielder this summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looked to strengthen United's midfield but a formal bid was never submitted for the England Under-21 international.

Given what Neville said about the midfielder on Monday Night Football he wouldn't be against the Leicester man making a move to Old Trafford.

“He is a genuine creative player,” Neville said on Sky Sports Monday Night Football. “I think he is outstanding. I think he will be playing for England a lot of times.

“He will be in the European Championship squad. I think he’s fantastic.”

Maddison impressed in his maiden top-flight campaign at the King Power Stadium last season, scoring seven goals and providing seven assists in 36 Premier League games.

The 22-year-old fitted the profile of player Solskjaer has planned his summer rebuild at Old Trafford, with the Reds also linked with moves for West Ham's Declan Rice and the Newcastle midfielder, Sean Longstaff.

MEN Sport understood that United were simply interested in the Leicester star, with Manchester City and Liverpool also linked with the youngster.

And Neville's colleague Jamie Carragher admitted he would like to see the midfielder move to Anfield.

"I think he is the one player outside of the top six who Liverpool should be looking at,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“People have been talking about (Philippe) Coutinho coming back, but obviously that hasn’t happened as he has gone to Bayern Munich, but if you are looking in the Premier League, yes he will cost a lot of money, but he should be the one Liverpool are looking at if you are going to take that next step up.”
