Manchester United are set to battle Arsenal for the signature of Arne Maier, according to reports.

Sport Bild suggest both clubs will go head-to-head for the signature of the Hertha Berlin midfielder in the coming months.

The 19-year-old is one of the brightest talents in German football and has already earned caps for his nation's Under-21 side.

According to the report United are one of many clubs to have "intensively watched" the starlet in recent months.

Maier has played every minute of Hertha Berlin's Bundesliga campaign so far this season, and continues to impress with his commanding midfield displays.

His remarkable rise is of no surprise to Hertha, and the German side acted quickly to ensure he signed a new contract in February, with his new deal tying him to the club until 2022.

United could make a move in the coming months, but it is expected Arsenal will pose serious competition as the race for his signature begins to heat-up.

In terms of other transfer news, United are also linked with a move for Ajax star Frenkie de Jong.

A report from The Sun suggest Jose Mourinho's side will battle Tottenham for the signature of the Dutch international.

According to the article United supposedly sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old earlier this month and could make an approach for the midfielder.

It is suggested Mourinho is a 'huge admirer' of De Jong and he is reportedly set on adding a versatile midfielder to his squad in January.

The report states Ajax have set a £50m price-tag on their prize asset and United are reportedly happy to pay it should they fight off interest from Spurs.
