Manchester United have slipped behind Barcelona and Real Madrid in the race to sign Benfica midfielder Joao Felix, according to reports.

The 19-year-old, who operates behind the striker at the Primeira Liga outfit, has caught the attention of Europe's elite with impressive displays since breaking through to Benfica's first team at the start of the season.

Felix has scored seven goals and assisted a further five strikes in 29 appearances for Benfica's first team. His performances have been rewarded with 10 appearances for Portugal's under-21 side, for whom Felix has scored on four occasions.

United are said to be courting Felix's services, but the Mirror claim Madrid and Barcelona are battling out as the most likely destinations for the Benfica academy product.

Meanwhile, Italian outlet Tutto Mercato claim that Inter Milan will target United striker Romelu Lukaku if Mauro Icardi leaves the San Siro at the end of the campaign.

Argentina international Icardi was stripped of the captaincy at Inter last week, and refused to travel for their Europa League tie against Rapid Vienna.

It is reported that Inter, who sit third in the Italian first division, would consider a £90m move for Lukaku, who has been out of favour at Old Trafford during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's caretaker reign.

Marcus Rashford has asserted himself as the Reds' first-choice striker, after netting six goals in eight Premier League games with Solskjaer at the healm.
