One of Manchester's top vegetarian restaurants has closed less than two years after moving to a new site in the city centre.

1847, which served boundary-pushing British vegetarian and vegan dishes using seasonal and foraged ingredients, served its last diners on Saturday.

Named after the year the Vegetarian Society was formed in the city, the original restaurant opened in Mosley Street in 2010 and closed in May 2017 as owner Damien Davenport searched for a bigger site.

It relocated to a larger unit on King Street that September, but Damien is now leaving the business behind to move overseas with his partner.

Announcing the closure on Facebook, he said: "2018 was an amazing year for me as my partner and I tied the knot. We also purchased a house overseas and we're moving there to continue with our next adventure.

"With everyone jumping on the veggie/vegan bandwagon, the time feels right and I'm proud 1847 led the way of meat-free dining. It has continued to trade well and the amount of positive feedback received is overwhelming."

The King Street site has been taken over by new owners and 'won't be closed for long', he added. The restaurant will be rebranded and it is not yet known what type of cuisine it will offer.

The Birmingham branch of 1847 will continue to trade as normal after being taken over by its head and sous chefs last summer.

"I have many fond memories of 1847 and I would like to thank every member of staff, customer and supplier that's supported us over the past 9 years," said Damien.

"Opening and running a business over this period has been no easy task but I couldn't have done it without our loyal customers and some of the best workers in hospitality."
