A New Bedford man was arrested Sunday morning after police said he was driving drunk when he slammed into a Dartmouth police cruiser.

Just before 2 a.m. Sunday, Dartmouth Police Officer Manny DeMelo was on Route 6 near Connecticut Avenue investigating another crash when his cruiser was struck by a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado driven by David Costa, a 56-year-old New Bedford resident, police said.

The officer was inside his cruiser at the time of the crash.

DeMelo was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for minor injuries, police said. Costa was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and negligent driving.
