SPRINGFIELD — Big Y Foods Inc. will build a 55,000-square-foot supermarket at 150 Boston Post Road in Milford, Connecticut, the Springfield-based company said Thursday.

This location will be the 73rd supermarket for Big Y, which operates in Connecticut and Massachusetts. The chain has a store scheduled to open in Derby, Connecticut, in 2019 and is hiring now for a new store in Marlborough.

Big Y din’t give a date Thursday for the planned opening of the Milford store.

Big Y said construction will provide opportunities for local contractors. And more than 130 full- and part-time positions are planned once the market opens.

Big Y promises locally sourced fruits and vegetables, fresh sushi, an extensive gluten free assortment and organic items along with other locally produced offerings, according to a news release. Big Y also offers freshly made pizzas and rotisserie chicken dinners, stir fry and fresh cooked-to-order fish and chips.

The stores now emphasize meals that are already prepared or in some cases partially prepared for busy consumers.

“We are excited to announce this addition to our Connecticut community of stores,” said Charles D’Amour, Big Y’s president and CEO. “We look forward to bringing Big Y’s world class service, quality and selection closer to shoppers in Milford and surrounding communities.”

Big Y has a total of 80 locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut including 70 supermarkets, 39 pharmacies, Fresh Acres Market, Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors and eight Big Y Express gas and convenience locations with over 11,000 employees. Brothers Paul and Gerald D’Amour, founded Big Y in 1936. The store was named after an intersection in Chicopee where two roads converge to form a "Y".
