SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission is warning the public to beware of a man who falsely claims to be a commission worker and asks to enter homes to take water samples without prior notice.

The commission has received recent reports of an individual attempting to gain entry into Springfield homes. It is similar to incidents reported last year, the commission said.

The individual is not an employee of the department nor works for a company affiliated with the commission.

Customers are reminded “to always be vigilant for any potential utility scam, and to remember that commission employees almost never arrive unannounced at a home to perform work,” the commission said. In almost all cases, commission work is performed by appointment. except for cases such as water or sewer emergency.

Any commission employee would need to show an official commission identification card. There is a telephone number on the back that can be called to verify employment.

Commission employees drive blue or white vehicles with official blue license plates, and the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission seal is displayed on the vehicle.

The public can call 413-452-1309 to verify whether an employee works for the commission.
