Pedestrian struck on Interstate 91 in Springfield

A man was struck by a vehicle Friday afternoon as he walked along the southbound lanes of Interstate 91 near exit 1 in Springfield.

Massachusetts State Police Trooper James DeAngelis said the department received several 911 calls around 3:40 p.m. reporting a man walking in the highway. Some callers said the man was seen sitting in the median of the divided highway.

When the first responding trooper arrived at the scene, he found the victim injured and unconscious. The man was transported to Baystate Medical Center by ambulance. Police did not have information about the severity of his injuries.

DeAngelis said traffic was tied up for a period of time, but was flowing normally by shortly after 4 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation.
