Where is that project? Springfield officials unveil online map of improvements to schools, parks, libraries and more

SPRINGFIELD — City officials unveiled an interactive online map Tuesday that allows the public to find the location and details regarding major projects funded over the past decade, including improvements to schools, parks and libraries.

The new “Neighborhood Enhancements Project Map” was announced at a press conference at the Hungry Hill Senior Center on Liberty Street. The senior center is among the many projects that can be found on the map, costing $131,900 to renovate in 2015 with city funds.

Timothy J. Plante, the city’s chief administrative and financial officer, and Ward 2 City Councilor Michael Fenton, joined Mayor Domenic J. Sarno in announcing the map.

The map provides basic details regarding projects from the past decade “from parks, to libraries, small businesses, schools, infrastructure to housing, youth development, neighborhoods and senior centers to public safety aspects,” Sarno said. It includes the cost of each project, the location, and the source of funding.

There are photographs and videos shown with some of the projects.

While major projects often get the majority of publicity, the map cites those and much smaller projects, with funding sources ranging from the city budget to federal Community Development Block Grant funds, Sarno said.

Sarno said the projects total more than $1 billion over the past 10 years.

Plante said the map is an “innovative way to see the capital investments happening all over the city.”

Fenton said the map provides a new tool to highlight the municipal projects being completed across neighborhoods.

“I encourage all residents to explore this new tool,” Fenton said. "The scope of the work completed is incredible.”
