Franklin County firefighters, shuttling water in tankers, battle intense fire outside Deerfield business

DEERFIELD — Area firefighters, shuttling water in tankers, extinguished an intense blaze that broke out near a River Road business Saturday night.

A firefighter suffered a minor injury while fighting the blaze and was treated and released at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, according to a post on the Deerfield Fire District Facebook page.

Firefighters, responding to a report of smoke in the area shortly after 9:20 p.m., saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the Allstates Asphalt and Trew Stone property at 901 River Road.

Arriving on scene, they discovered a large pile of wood demolition and timbers, approximately 50 feet in diameter and 20 feet high, was fully-involved in flames.

Engines from fire departments in Greenfield, Whately and Turners Falls established a fill site for tankers, Meanwhile, tankers from Conway, South Deerfield and Montague Center provided coverage at the scene in case the fire extended into nearby woods.

The fire was deemed under control around 1 a.m. Approximately 34,000 gallons of water, along with foam, was used to extinguish the blaze. A bucket loader was required to spread the pile out.

The Sunderland Fire Department provided coverage at the Deerfield Fire District station while the blaze was being fought.
