Police chase ends in crash outside of Taylor Swift’s Rhode Island home

Singer Taylor Swift’s home in New England served as the endgame of a police chase through multiple communities.

Around 1 a.m. Tuesday, an officer in the Rhode Island community of Hopkinton was traveling on Main Street when a vehicle reversed course upon seeing the officer.

The officer signaled for the driver to stop, to no success, and the chase went on to involve multiple police vehicles and reached speeds as high as 65 miles per hour, The Westerly Sun reports, citing police documents.

The chase ended outside of Swift’s luxury home in Watch Hill, with the vehicle crashing into the gate.

Following the crash, officers say the driver attempted to flee, jumping a fence, The Westerly Sun reports.

The driver was later found and identified by police as 19-year-old Shykeim Edwin Lewis, of Hartford. He was arrested by police on reckless driving charges. There were three passengers in the vehicle at the time of the crash - two 18-year-olds and a 16-year-old.

“We only have enough evidence to charge the driver,” said Westerly Police Chief Shawn Lacey, as reported by The Sun. “Officers had accompanied all those taken to the hospital, as we were unaware of who the driver was at the time, but the officers were released from that assignment once we identified Mr. Lewis as the driver.”

Swift purchased the Rhode Island home six years ago, paying $17.75 million for the mansion measuring more than 11,000-square-feet. The estate features sweeping coastal views and is set back from the roadway, accessible by a gated drive. It became the most expensive property sold in the state when the sale was finalized in 2013.
