Hazmat incident

A delivery truck carrying construction materials lost a portion of its load on I-291 Friday afternooon, leaving some 30 gallons of roofing adhesive on the highway. Springfield firefighters and state Department of Environmental Protection workers cleaned up the glue.

Interstate-291 in Springfield was reopened Friday afternoon after a delivery truck carrying construction materials lost a portion of its load and dumped adhesive on the roadway.

Springfield Fire Department spokesman Capt. Brian Tetreault said the incident resulted in a Hazmat response by the Fire Department and the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The truck was carrying a variety of products including 5-gallon jugs of roofing adhesive, Tetreault said. The truck lost a portion of its load as it traveled between Exit 4 and 5A at about 2:43 p.m. leaving 30 gallons of the sticky material spread across the highway.

As all lanes were closed for over an hour, traffic in the eastbound lanes of the highway backed up into downtown and onto I-91.

Springfield firefighters applied an absorbent material to the glue to help pick it up. The clean up was conducted by DEP workers, and all lanes of the highway were reopened at 4:09 p.m., the Mayor’s Office announced.

Tetreault said there were no injuries in the incident and the public was never in danger.
