Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker is no longer America’s most popular governor, poll says

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker no longer America’s most popular governor, according to a new poll by Morning Consult.

Baker, a Republican, ranked third with an approval rating of 69% and disapproval rating of 19%, according to Morning Consult, which surveys more than 5,000 registered voters nationwide on their governor every quarter. Twelve percent said they didn’t know.

The last quarterly poll in October suggested that 73% of Massachusetts voters approved of Baker’s work as governor, and 16% disapproved. Twelve percent said they didn’t know.

Baker trailed behind Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon and Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, also Republicans. Both had 69% of the vote, but Gordon’s disapproval rate was at 11% and Hogan’s was at 16%.

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott, a Republican, ranked fourth. New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, also a Republican, ranked fifth.

The five least popular governors were: Hawaii Gov. David Ige, a Democrat; Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin, a Republican; Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo, a Democrat; Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, a Democrat; and Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, a Democrat.

While Massachusetts leans blue, Baker held the top spot on the poll for at least two years. Baker is a Republican who supports abortion rights and LGBTQ rights, and he has worked across party lines with Massachusetts Democrats in the Legislature.
