Massachusetts is expected to see another “wintry mess” of snow and other precipitation this weekend as a brief system moves in overnight on Sunday, even as daytime temperatures stay above the freezing point.
The National Weather Service reports the short burst of snow, sleet and freezing rain will appear very similar to what we saw Wednesday night into Thursday morning: “Déjà vu with this next kitchen sink weather system and a very similar setup to what we’ve seen many times this winter, most recently this last week,” the agency reported Friday morning.
Late Saturday night and into early Sunday morning, between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. across the state, snow will likely begin to fall, according to the National Weather Service. During that period, the agency warns of “hazardous travel impacts” and reductions to visibility at times.
Current forecasts predict many communities will see less than an inch of snow accumulation, followed by up to a quarter inch of ice as snow turns over into sleet and freezing rain, which could leave roadways icy Sunday morning.
The nighttime wintry mix will give way to warmer conditions on Sunday, with daytime temperatures rising into the mid-to-upper 40s before plummeting closer to the freezing point on Monday.
From Sunday night into Monday, the National Weather Service warns of “strong, damaging winds” with gusts between 35-50 mph, which could lead to isolated power outages and downed trees or tree limbs.
